What Exactly Is Drift DIVING?

Let’s face it there are hundreds of specialty and distinctive specialty courses out there. Some are as frivolous as underwater basket weaving. But one of the most useful Specialty Certifications is the SDI Drift Diver Specialty.

Drift diving is often compared to hang gliding, except instead of riding up currents and other winds, you are riding the currents maintaining neutral buoyancy and perfect trim.

Though there is nothing stopping any Open Water diver from going out and doing a drift dive this Certification provides you with the additional education of diving in a current. Drift Diving has an extra element of risk that can put you in harms way if you do not know or understand what you are possibly up against.

What Are You Going To LEARN?

Drift diving allows a diver to travel over a large area without expending much energy. You simply get neutrally buoyant and enjoy the ride taking in the scenery moves past you.

The SDI Drift Diver Course covers the “how-to’s” of drift diving from, how to enter and exit drifts, what to do if you get caught in a drift and wish to get out, how to get out of the drift to observe something special, and much more.

The course will also introduce you to and provide information on the various types of drift currents you may encounter.

What Equipment Will You NEED?

Along with your basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a float such as a Dive Flag Buoy or SMB, a line and reel. Your The Dive Place Instructor and The Dive Place crew may suggest other equipment options, such as wearing more exposure protection to stay comfortable in cooler water.

You may be able to get college credit for the Drift Diver course – ask your instructor.

Also, the first dive of this Specialty Diver course may credit as an Adventure Dive toward your Advanced Adventure Diver certification – ask your instructor about earning credit.
